White to rainbow in 5k - Fun at Colour in the Park
17 September 2015
Our second annual Colour in the Park 5k fun run was held on Sunday 6th September at Herrington Park with almost 400 eager people, ready to get colourful for Grace House. The sun was shining, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and it was the ideal way to enjoy a sunny Sunday! We'd like to say a massive thank you to all of the sponsors, volunteers, staff and participants who helped us organise another fabulous event for Grace House.
This year’s event was kindly sponsored by a range of fantastic organisations including Gentoo, Yorkshire Bank, Asda, Virgin Active and Ingeus Training who all enjoyed having their own paint station in their company colours to get everyone coloured up! We even had an extra pink station at the end for Grace House so there was a rainbow of runners from start to finish.
This fun family event was the perfect excuse to get everyone together to raise funds for Grace House and some children with disabilities joined us on the course who will benefit from the facilities at Grace House, once open.
The concept of the event is for runners (or walkers) to go through the paint stations at various points along the route and our volunteers splash everyone with colourful paint powder. Check out our gallery of images to see how much fun everyone had.
We welcomed Sunny the Seagull, SunFM’s mascot who was there taking selfies with everyone; He certainly made for some interesting photographs!
One of our most interesting participants was Deano, this stand out runner ran the whole course with a wheelie bin on his back, and it might have something to do with his job working in the cleansing department of Sunderland Council. He definitely needed cleansing after the run; see his photographs in the gallery.
One of our Board Trustees, Phil really got stuck into the day and helped out the Yorkshire Bank team at the Blue paint station, along with staff and volunteers from Grace House who thoroughly enjoyed getting colourful. The white t-shirts really didn’t last long with all of the colourful paint being thrown.
Huge thanks go to Asda, who had the largest team of runners at the event with participants from branches across the North East. We welcomed participants of all ages and all abilities, and seeing everyone join in the group warm up was fantastic, with a sea of white t-shirts and neon glasses before everyone set off on their colourful journey around the 5k course.
One runner explained that this was the first challenge he had taken part in following surgery in June. He said “I did wonder whether 5km would be too much for me, but I just kept going and got there in the end. The paint stations made it so much fun, the distance just sped by. It’s been a great boost to my confidence and Grace House is a brilliant cause.”
At the end of the course, all the runners were treated to delicious pizza and a souvenir medal to take home. We have had such positive feedback regarding the event and we’re so pleased to raise awareness of Grace House in the community and involve the whole region in fundraising for us.
We understand that the Color Run in Sunderland was unfortunately cancelled so if you didn’t have the opportunity to take part this year, we have our eye firmly on next year’s event which we’ll be planning very soon. If you’d like to know more and be part of this fantastic event in 2016, please send us an email to register your interest for next year and we’ll keep you updated with news about our Colour in the Park run 2016.
