I qualified as a doctor in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1982 and trained in the Northeast and Aberdeen before taking up my post as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in Sunderland in 1994. I’m now Director of Research & Innovation for the hospital and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. I’m interested in clinical research, high-risk pregnancy and labour ward care and also medical education. For many years I’ve been involved in skills-drills training in obstetric and labour emergencies and also ‘human factors’ training to improve patient safety and outcomes.
At home, I have a teenage daughter Lauren who is doing her A levels and an elder daughter Abbie doing a degree at Sunderland University, as well as bringing up my (very) lively four year old grandson Lewis!! My fiancée Lesley works with me as a research midwife at the hospital.
I’m a charity Trustee for the ALSG (Advanced Life Support Group) in Manchester, which oversees several emergency training programmes and it was a pleasure to be invited to join the Trustees at Grace House in 2016. I look forward to promoting the charity and to helping facilitate its’ further development.
