Karen MacLennan

Senior Fundraiser

I was born in High Barnes in Sunderland in 1961, living just off Chester Road up until her
early 20’s.  Married to Alex we have three children Nichola, Jamie and Aidan and three
grandchildren Harriet, Ruby and Charlie.  Sadly, Jamie died suddenly aged 27 years in
December 2014 after having a seizure, at home, he had epilepsy.

My working career started in Banking working for the then Midland Bank in 1978.  Following
the birth of Jamie, I began working in accounts and payroll where I worked at Edwin Trisk, a
world leader, at the time, in paint drying for the car industry.  I loved working with figures
and export documentation especially Letters of Credit.  I managed an accounts and HR
department and, as part of my role, would often organise the charitable side of the business
donations and organising the many company events.  In 1998, I joined Barclays Bank at
Doxford Park where I managed a team of twelve advisors.  I was also on the Sports and
Social Committee where I organised all of the social and fundraising activities.

For eight years in the 90’s I also had my own karaoke show where I would often be out
fundraising for local charities.

I became involved with Grace House when Kathy Secker, Grace House founder, launched
the appeal in 2000.  I was working at Barclays Bank and contacted Kathy and raised money
through the staff for Grace House.  Kathy later showed her the original notebooks when she
launched the appeal and my name was the first person that contacted her wanting to help.

In 2004 Kathy advertised for a fundraiser and I didn’t hesitate to apply – I started
working for Grace House on the 1 st September 2004 and I am so proud about every
one of the donors that I have met it has been a privilege to meet.  Grace House was
Kathy Secker’s dream and with the support of local communities and businesses has
seen Grace House built and equipped.
