We are delighted to announce that the hospice for children and young people will be built at Southwick in Sunderland. A 999 year lease for the land was agreed in May 2010. Planning permission was granted in August and it is expected works will start on site in November. Further updates will be posted here.
The name Southwick is still referred to affectionately by the locals as “Suddick”. It may have originated from various sources.e.g;
- It could be Scandinavian, and given by the Norsemen in the ninth century, after their invasion of Monkwearmouth. In its pure original form it would be “Sudvik,” then “SudÂwick,” a compound word, composed of “Sud,” meaning “South,” and “vik” or “wick,” meaning a “place on a stream”
- Sudvicus (Latin) meaning the South Village
- The South Bend of the River Wear
- The Southyk family who owned the land in the area prior to 1300
Originally a farming community the area developed to become well renowned for wooden and iron shipbuilding, glassmaking, potteries and engineering companies.
